Allergens: Dust and Dust Mites

What are dust allergens?

Dust allergens are substances found in dust. They may include:

  • Fabric fibers

  • Lint

  • Feathers

  • Stuffing materials

  • Animal protein (dander, saliva, urine, and body oils)

  • Bacteria

  • Mold and fungus spores

  • Food particles

  • Plants

  • Insects and their waste

What is a dust mite allergen?

Dust mites are microscopic organisms that normally live throughout homes and businesses. The mites and their waste products thrive in:

  • Draperies

  • Stuffed animals

  • Bedding, pillows, and mattresses

  • Upholstered furniture

  • Carpets

  • Air (but only right after vacuuming or sweeping)
